A day before I was to hop on a plane to Germany, I got a cancellation letter in my inbox.

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Traveler:

Thank you for choosing Viking River Cruises for your Romantic Danube cruise from Nuremberg to Budapest. As you may have gathered from the media or international weather reports, Europe is experiencing unusually heavy rains and river levels are abnormally high for this time of year. As a result, Viking Prestige is unable to complete its present cruise and will therefore not be able to reach Nuremberg in time for your June 2, 2013, embarkation. After extensive discussions with Viking’s nautical and operational teams in Europe and based on current weather forecasts, we have made the difficult decision to cancel your Viking Prestige cruise for next week.

We are incredibly disappointed—as we know you are too. Please know that this is unprecedented weather and we have carefully weighed all potential alternatives. We would like to provide you with the option of rebooking another cruise at a later date. We are also pleased to extend an additional credit of $500.00 per person towards that or any other future river cruise with Viking, in acknowledgement of the inconvenience you experienced. You may also choose instead to receive a full refund of the amount you paid Viking Cruises, along with a $500.00 per person future cruise credit.

A Customer Relations representative will contact you tomorrow morning to discuss your concerns, questions, and which option will work best for you: to rebook or to receive a full refund.
